Le parc national Vuntut a été créé en 1995 en vertu de l'Entente définitive de la Première Nation des Gwitchin Vuntut dans le but de conserver le mode de vie traditionnel et actuel des Gwich’in ainsi que les plans d’eau, les plantes et les animaux essentiels à leur culture. Ensemble, Parcs Canada, le gouvernement des Gwitchin Vuntut et le Conseil des ressources renouvelables du Nord du Yukon gèrent le parc en collaboration.
