Yukon First Nations Self-Government Classroom Toolkit

Overview

This toolkit is designed to support educators in planning and preparing lesson plans that explore Yukon First Nation self-determination and self-government by exploring self-government models and many Yukon First Nations’ Final and Self-Government Agreements.

We offer three suggested lesson plans along with a quiz you can use in your classroom!

The toolkit’s offers guidance and resources to help integrate First Nations’ perspectives into your curriculum, aligning with core competencies and objectives.

This toolkit is for a secondary school classroom but can be adapted for elementary school level learning.

Why this is important

The governance structure in the Yukon is unique as there are 11 of 14 Yukon First Nations who have signed modern treaties and are self-governing nations.

Each First Nation’s Final and Self-Government Agreement influences every aspect of life in the Yukon. Learning the history of modern treaties in the Yukon and about each First Nation’s Final and Self-Government Agreements helps us better understand life in the Yukon.

How to use this toolkit in your classroom

For each resource section, we suggest possible lesson plan and curriculum pairings. Educators can determine how to integrate this toolkit to meet their curriculum objectives.

  • Appreciate and respect how First Nations’ perspectives shape the Yukon’s past, present, and future.
  • Appreciate the diversity of cultures and traditional ways of knowing across Yukon’s First Nations.
  • Ensure First Nations' perspectives are incorporated into the curriculum.


Knowledge:

  • Explain different perspectives on past and present people, places, issues, or events, and distinguish between worldviews of today and the past.
  • Deepen understanding of the impact of colonialism and how it continues to affect the political, social, and economic lives of Yukon First Nations.
  • Increase knowledge of historical and modern treaties and their negotiation and implementation.

     
Yukon First Nations Self-Government Classroom Toolkit

Lesson 1: Contemporary successes for Yukon First Nations

Students explore contemporary successes of 11 Yukon First Nations in achieving self-determination and self-governance through negotiating modern treaty agreements and the contributions of role models.

Lesson 2: The Trailblazers

Students learn about trailblazers in Yukon First Nations history and their role in shaping the path towards self-determination, self-government, and social justice.

Lesson 3: Government policies and self-government

Students learn about territorial and federal government policies and how they affected Yukon First Nations and their progress towards self-government.

Quiz: Yukon First Nations Self-Government
