Together, the park (whose name means "where fish spawn") and adjacent Habitat Protection Area and Settlement Lands protect a distinct ecosystem in the Traditional Territory of the Vuntut Gwichin First Nation.

The park boasts world-class bear viewing, year-round open water, and large trees rarely seen this far north. The Porcupine Caribou herd also migrates through the area, and Dall sheep and moose call it home.

The 6500 square kilometre wilderness area is a legacy of the Vuntut Gwitchin land claim agreement and is jointly managed by Yukon government and Vuntut Gwitchin government.

The Final Agreements establish a number of Special Management Areas and outline how they will be jointly managed by the Government of Yukon, Canada and First Nations.

Special Management Areas can be protected through different laws depending on what needs safeguarding. The Yukon and National Parks Acts, Yukon and Canadian Wildlife Acts, and Yukon’s Heritage Resources Act are all laws that can be used to protect these areas.
